Câmara de Lobos is a fishing village about 8 kilometers west of Funchal, and it’s become one of the most popular places to visit near the island’s capital.
We stayed in a small town just past Câmara de Lobos, so we ended up passing by almost daily on our way to/from Funchal. We loved seeing all the colorful fishing boats, walking the cobblestone streets, and checking out a few of the town’s best cafes!
But what if you don’t have your own car? Is it easy to get from Funchal to Câmara de Lobos with public transportation?
Some people have even asked us if it’s possible to walk between towns!
Whether you’re planning to drive, take public transportation, or hire taxis around Madeira, these are all your options for getting to Câmara de Lobos from Funchal.
How to Get to Câmara de Lobos
Anyone staying in Funchal has a few options for getting to the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos.
If you have your own car, it’s as simple as sticking the town into Google Maps and setting off (although driving in Madeira is an adventure itself).
Otherwise, you can;
- Hire a taxi – Probably the most straightforward option
- Take Public Buses – Easily the cheapest option, but does require a connection
- Book a Guided Tour (with Câmara de Lobos on the itinerary)
1. Hire a taxi
Hiring a taxi is the quickest and most convenient way to reach Câmara de Lobos.
The ride takes just 10-15 minutes, so unlike finding a ride to Porto Moniz, getting a driver to take you over to the fishing village won’t take much convincing.
There are taxi stands all over downtown Funchal. If you head to one on Avenida do Mar or near the Funchal Cable Car, you won’t have to wait long.
Expect to pay just €10–20 for a one-way trip.
If you know exactly when you want to leave/return, you could also arrange a taxi to pick you up at your hotel. In Madeira, we always use Welcome Pickups for easy private transfers.
They may be more well-known for airport transfers, but It’s more reliable than walking downtown to find a taxi, and we think the door-to-door service is worth a small surcharge.
2. Take a Public Bus
If you’re traveling on a budget, the public bus is the most affordable way to get to Câmara de Lobos.
Funchal doesn’t really have a traditional bus station – rather, a collection of bus stops along Avenida Do Mar. However, two buses pass through here that can take you to Câmara de Lobos.
Each bus route takes about 20 minutes and costs €2 each way.
Horários do Funchal (Line 1) runs every 30 minutes from 6:00 AM to midnight. The issue is that the route ends at Ponta da Laranjeira, which is still approximately a 10-minute walk from the harbor. Check out the full timetable here.
Rodoeste has several more direct bus routes that will actually pass through Câmara de Lobos on their way to Western Madeira.
These all depart from Ave Do Mar and pass through Câmara de Lobos on their way to Western Madeira.
This includes Buses 01, 03, 04, 06, 07, 08, 27, 96, 115, 137, 142, 146, 148, and 154.
Although these buses don’t have set timetables available online, they all depart from Ave Do Mar. So, if you walk to one of the main Funchal bus stops, you won’t have to wait long. Just let the driver know you’ll need to get off early when you board!
3. Book a tour to Câmara de Lobos
One way to avoid planning logistics is to book a tour of Câmara de Lobos.
There are short tuk-tuk tours to the village, hop-on-hop-off buses, and longer full-day tours that include a stop for breakfast here!
Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour
This Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour is a flexible way to explore more of Funchal and Câmara de Lobos at your own pace.
It does require you to be a little hands-on for planning, but you can grab a 48-hour ticket, then spend a couple of days hopping on and off at 30 designated stops, including the Funchal Marina, Farmers’ Market, Pico de Barcelos Viewpoint, and Câmara de Lobos.
The buses run regularly throughout the day, departing from Avenida do Mar in Funchal every 30 to 45 minutes.
The ticket also includes discounts on local restaurants, shops, and attractions, making it a convenient and value-packed option for travelers.
Câmara de Lobos tuk-tuk tour
The Câmara de Lobos Tuk Tuk Tour offers a more intimate experience. For 90 minutes, a private local guide will take you on a scenic drive along the western coast. The tour starts with a pickup from your hotel in Funchal or the marina (if you arrive by cruise ship).
The guide provides valuable insights into the region’s history and culture. You can also try local poncha and freshly prepared seafood.
We’ve hired tuk-tuks all over the world (even driving our own in Sri Lanka), and they’re so much fun. The open air is awesome and adds to the experience, and the views along the way are epic, especially when you climb up cliffs toward Cabo Girão.
West Madeira Ultimate Tour
This full-day adventure starts in Câmara de Lobos, but they take you to a bunch of other highlights around the island as well, including Cabo Girão Skywalk, the Paul da Serra plateau, São Vicente village, and the volcanic pools of Porto Moniz.
Our guess is that you probably want more than just an hour in Câmara de Lobos, but if you don’t have much time in Madeira, this is a great option!
Tips for Visiting Câmara de Lobos
Câmara de Lobos is such a relaxing and scenic place. We wish we had spent a couple more evenings there while staying in Madeira.
Here are a few tips to make the most of this enchanting village.
Try Poncha
Supposedly, Câmara de Lobos is the birthplace of poncha, Madeira’s traditional sugarcane rum drink mixed with honey and lemon. One of the best places to get a glass is Bar Filhos D’Mar.
Arrive Early for Dinner (Or Make Reservations)
The first time we visited Câmara de Lobos, we arrived around 7:00 PM, and every restaurant was packed. We put our names in and had to wait for nearly an hour to be seated. Some of the best places to eat include:
- Viola Restaurant: The BEST meat house in Madeira. A few locals recommended it to us; the espetada here did not disappoint!
- Restaurante Vila do Peixe: Translates to “fish village,” and it’s one of the most popular places in town to get fresh seafood and view the harbor.
- Restaurante Vila da Carne: Translates to “meat village” and is owned by the same people as Restaurante Vila da Peixe. It has the same view of the harbor but serves various meat dishes and espetada.
- Bar Seven Seas: We loved this spot. It’s a little cheaper than the other dinner spots in town and offers various bar food and dinner plates, including meat platters, pasta, salads, sandwiches, and seafood (fish, squid, octopus, limpets, and shrimp).
Explore Beyond the Harbor
While the harbor is the main focal point of Câmara de Lobos and the photo you’ll see most often, there’s more to see.
Check out the Church of São Sebastião, search for street art/sculptures, and take a drive up to Cabo Girão (one of Europe’s highest sea cliffs)!
Wear Comfortable Shoes
While Câmara de Lobos is small, it’s mostly cobblestone streets and uneven terrain. If the water is choppy, you’ll also be walking along potentially slippery sidewalks as you approach the harbor.
So, wear proper footwear (no heels or thin sandals) if you plan on exploring the town for a little before or after dinner.
Book a Night at Pestana Churchill Bay
If you want to really experience Câmara de Lobos, consider staying here for the night. The best place to stay at a relatively affordable rate is Pestana Churchill Bay.
It’s a highly rated, 4-star property in Câmara de Lobos. It is known for its waterfront location, with most of the hotel’s rooms and rooftop pool offering views of the harbor. The bar and restaurant also have similar views, and everything is designed to create a relaxing ambiance that reflects the quiet charm of the village itself.
Closing Thoughts
Câmara de Lobos is one of Madeira’s most charming villages. Its cliffs offer a nice blend of natural beauty, great restaurants, and a rich cultural history.
The easiest way is definitely to rent a car and drive yourself.
However, it’s also easy to hire a taxi to Câmara de Lobos, take the bus, or book a short tour of the village.
Either way, it shouldn’t cost much and will take less than 30 minutes, making adding it to your itinerary easy, even if you only have a few days in Madeira.
