Ponta Delgada was the first place we touched down in the Azores, so naturally, it was the first city we had to figure out how to navigate. We’re very comfortable renting cars and driving overseas, so it wasn’t the roads we were nervous about; It was parking in Ponta Delgada.
Only one of our hotels had free private parking, so we knew that if we rented a car/scooter, we’d be responsible for finding a safe place to park, and we had questions!
Is parking in Ponta Delgada free? Can we leave our car parked overnight? Are there specific rules we need to follow?
Every city has its own local regulations and parking availability, and all the info online was incredibly outdated, so we decided to jot down some notes during our experience finding parking spots in Ponta Delgada.
Now, we can share more relevant information with you!
We’ll start by answering the most common questions we hear about parking in the city and then give you a list of all the free parking spaces, paid garages, and hotels with free parking!

Things to Know About Parking in Ponta Delgada
There are actually a lot of places to park in Ponta Delgada, including free parking spaces, paid parking garages, street parking, and hotels with free private parking on the premises.
So, once you know where to look, it’s not stressful at all. But it is important to understand the local laws and parking regulations, too!
Is it easy to Park in Ponta Delgada?
Parking in Ponta Delgada is much easier than in most places in Europe. It’s a slow-paced, sleepy town for most of the year, and the government has done an excellent job creating many free parking plazas within walking distance of the city.
But they fill up towards midday, so try to get there early during peak tourist season.

Is parking in Ponta Delgada free?
There are both free and paid parking options in Ponta Delgada.
Many parking lots and plazas offer free parking, especially those a bit further from the city center. We always had the best luck at Estacionamento dos Pinheiros or Rua Do Jardim Parking Lot.
However, most covered/underground parking garages charge an hourly rate.
How to Pay for Paid Parking
Paying for parking in Ponta Delgada is similar to most places around the world.
Payment for street parking is only required between 8:00 A.M. and 8:00 P.M., but there’s always a meter nearby. You simply enter your license plate number and pay for however long you need to be parked (Usually a maximum of 2-4 hours).
There’s usually a kiosk or an attendant where you can pay for parking at the parking garage.

Does Ponta Delgada Have a Parking App?
We don’t know of a dedicated parking app in Ponta Delgada. Parking payments are generally made with coins at the physical meters or cash/card in the parking garages.
Your Type of Vehicle Matters
The type of vehicle you drive definitely makes a difference. Smaller cars and scooters are certainly easier to park, especially in tight street parking spots. So, if you’re planning to rent a car in São Miguel, we’d encourage you to get a smaller, compact car to make parking easier.
Scooters are even better for parking, and when we rented a scooter, we never had to worry about parking. We could also use the most convenient parking spot in Ponta Delgada, right across the street from Portas da Cidade.
Where to Park in Ponta Delgada
Now, let’s get more specific about exactly where to find parking spots around Ponta Delgada!
Street Parking in Ponta Delgada
Street Parking is legal in Ponta Delgada, but only in certain areas. You’ll also need to double-check and make sure that it’s not a paid parking street.
If it is metered, there will be a parking meter nearby. You can type in your license plate number (registration number) and pay for however long you need.
Once you get the ticket, put it inside your car’s dash to validate your parking.
FYI: All street parking is free from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM and on Sundays.

Parking Garages & Parking Plazas
We parked at Estacionamento dos Pinheiros most often. It was right down the street from our hotel, and there were spaces for both scooters and cars.
Most of the parking lots are very full throughout the day but clear out after 5:00 PM, so if you’re looking for overnight parking, it’s pretty easy to find a spot.
- Estacionamento dos Pinheiros – Free Parking (approx. 150 Spots)
- Rua Do Jardim Parking Lot – Free Parking (approx. 250 Spots)
- Parque Motas, Portas da Cidade – Motorcyle/Scooter Parking. Extremely close to everything in Ponta Delgada (approx. 30 Spots)
- Parque de Estacionamento da Avenida – Underground Parking (€0.50/hour)
- Teatro Micaelense – Underground Parking (€
- 1.00/hour)
- Rua De Santana Parking Lot – Small Free Parking Lot (approx. 50 Spots)
Overnight Parking
All free parking lots are open 24/7, and you can park overnight if you’d like. However, we should warn you that there is no security.
São Miguel is very, very safe. But if that concerns you, you might want to park your car overnight in one of the underground paid parking facilities.
These underground lots cost about €10 per 24 hours, so it is still affordable.

Parking at Ponta Delgada Airport
Ponta Delgada Airport (PDL) is very easy and affordable, and you rarely will have any issues finding a spot.
At the departures terminal, there is a specific area called ‘Kiss & Fly’ where you can stop for up to 10 minutes for free.
For people just looking to pick up a friend or family member from the airport, you can use Parking Lot 1 (P1), which is €0.70/15 minutes and a maximum of €14 for 24 hours.
If you need to stay longer, you’ll want to drive over to Parking Lot 2 (P2) and park there.
It’s the same price as P1, but you’re allowed to stay long-term. After the first 24 hours, it’s €5 for every additional day you keep your car parked there.
Hotels in Ponta Delgada With Free Parking
There are many free parking plazas in Ponta Delgada, so it’s nice to book a hotel with private parking and not have to worry about finding a spot every night.
The first place we ever stayed in Ponta Delgada (CFS Azores Guest House) had its own private parking lot, so we were able to know we had a free place to park every night.
Best Value Guesthouse – CFS Azores Guest House
CFS Azores Guest House was the first place we ever stayed in the Azores, and it’s still one of the best value accommodations we’ve found on the island.
The rooms were admittedly small, but it was right on the outskirts of town. We got a free buffet breakfast every morning, and the hosts were accommodating in getting us checked in and making sure we had everything we needed!

Best Boutique Hotel Casa da Galeria
Casa Da Galeria is rarely available, but if you get lucky enough to catch it on the days you plan to stay in Ponta Delgada, you should take advantage of it and book ASAP.
The property is central to everything in the city, with stunning rooms and a rooftop terrace with a pool and views of the whole city. It’s really awesome.
There’s also free breakfast included with every booking, and almost all of their rooms have a dining area, kitchenette, and large balcony.

Best Luxury Hotel – Grand Hotel Açores Atlântico
The Grand Hotel is one of the most luxurious places to stay in Ponta Delgada. It has the feel of a classic hotel, which we know some people prefer over a villa or apartment-style accommodation.
The 5-stay hotel is truly a luxurious spot with pristine rooms, a heated indoor pool, classic European decor, and a prime location right on the water overlooking the historic port.
Try to get a room/suite with a view of the ocean (it’s not much extra), and they offer free valet parking for all their guests!

Most Unique Stay – The Homeboat Company
The Homeboat is a collection of mobile homes on the water in Ponta Delgada port. It’s such a cute, unique place to stay. It’s within walking distance of the city and offers free parking onsite. They also offer free breakfast!
The downside is that they are small, and there is no double bed. Every mobile home has a single bed and a sofa bed, and a cot is available on request in case you are traveling with a child.
There’s also no kitchen (only a microwave and mini-fridge), but honestly, that’s a small price to pay for the chance to stay IN a boat in the Azores!

What’s it Like Driving in São Miguel
In Ponta Delgada, the streets are incredibly narrow, and many are one-way, making driving a vehicle around town very difficult. So, it’s best to find a parking spot on the outskirts of the city and explore on foot.
But you really should have a car or a scooter to go explore the rest of the island. The bus system is very infrequent, and taxis are very, very expensive.
So, we still recommend renting a car. The roads around the island are well cared for and easy to navigate, and there are specific pullouts near all the best viewpoints!

Renting a Car in São Miguel
Sao Miguel is the largest Island in the Azores, and there are tons of rental agencies both in Ponta Delgada town and at the airport.
We actually rented a scooter in São Miguel, but it rained on and off the whole time, making us wish we’d had a car. A rental car can cost anywhere between $15-50/day, depending on when you travel. Here’s a quick breakdown of what we’ve seen:
- October – April: $$15-20/day
- May, June, & September: $30-40/day
- July – August: $60-70
